Here it is, after a long month of impatience, I finally made it ! I left my Berlin life for another one in Izmir on the Mediterranean coast. A really wise decision especially when winter is coming.
My journey starts here by discovering a new flat surrounded by my welcoming flatmates, ready to take me on an adventure with them. They helped me so much for the first days on my arrival and we were able to exchange our tips to navigate in the city. PIYA, my hosting organization, also offered me a warm welcome and support in all my onboarding and visa processes. It was at that time I discovered in a more detailed way my tasks.
One of my main jobs has been teaching English to people of all ages, from curious 8-year-olds to enthusiastic adults up to 60 years old. It’s been a bit tricky to make the lessons fun for everyone, but it’s also been really rewarding to see them learn and grow. It’s those moments when people thank me for the session that really make me feel like I’m making a difference in the local community.
I’ve also helped PIYA’s team with their international missions, especially supporting volunteers in Nepal. Whether it’s giving them resources, brainstorming ideas, or just being there for them, it’s been amazing to see how our efforts make a difference both here and around the world. Of course, this only has been a part of my time there, as an experienced traveller, I of course discovered other regions of Türkiye. I had a seminar in Diyarbakır which was a great way to meet new people and learn more about Türkiye’s different cultures. I also discovered Istanbul during a weekend (which is not enough) and saw from my own eyes the city based on two continents. Strolling through the busy streets of Kadiköy and standing in front of the Hagia Sophia reminded me why I love exploring new places. I still have a preference for Izmir, with a similar vibe but less crowded and touristy.
One of my favorite time was definitely my first time trying seafood in İzmir. I enjoyed perfectly grilled sardines and octopus in the Kemeralti bazaar, reminding me of my French roots and my birth city close to the ocean in France. The flavors were amazing, and it felt like a true introduction to the rich food culture of the city !
Those first two months already were full of memories, surprises and discoveries. Before coming over there, I was wishing to feel useful to a community and couldn’t be happier by choosing this volunteering program here in Izmir. It helped me discover skills I wouldn’t have expected to grow such as teaching or eloquence. But it also helped me feel better. Especially to gain back my moral and better health conditions especially after long experience of office jobs back in Berlin.I’d highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for a unique blend of cultural immersion, personal growth, and meaningful contribution. If you’re thinking about volunteering in İzmir, come prepared to give and learn – you’ll leave with so much more than you could ever imagine !
