ESC Voluntary Service in Barcelona, Spain, from end of September – December 2019

Three months in Spain, working with youngsters, challenging yourself and contributing to a community!

– in short, this is what you can expect from this ESC project in Spain!

Dates: End of September 2019 – December 2019

Location: Barcelona, Spain

The main objective of this project is to give the opportunity to a German youngster to improve and acquire competencies for their personal, educational and professional development. At the same time, the hosting organisation Ayuntamiento de San Justo Desvern (Casal de Joves) aims to enlarge its international profile and involve more youngsters in this type of European experience.

Why should you participate?

The involvement in this short-term ESC will give you an opportunity to develop an increased understanding of other cultures, forms of education, tools and methods, project management, team-work and interpersonal skills. Particularly if you have an interest in working with a diverse community of young people and a strong sense of initiative, this project will give you the chance to develop yourself while contributing to an organisation that is very experienced in youth work and willing to guide you through three months of voluntary work.

What would I do every day?

You would join the Casal de Joves team and assist them in their daily activities, while bringing you own interests, skills and initiatives to the table. Volunteering with this organisation aims to improve your competencies in teamwork, independent work, taking responsibility, conflict resolution, empathy, sense of initiative and decision-making capacities.You will have the chance to learn more about didactic methods used in the organisation, forms of action protocol in social education and acquire skills to adapt to the youngsters’ needs.

The timetable of the volunteering work could look like this:

Tuesday: 10h-14h and 16h to 21h

Wednesday: 10h to 14h

Thursday: 10h-14h and 16h to 21h

Friday: 16h to 22h

Saturday: 16h to 22h

Monday and Sunday: free

** Two mornings are saved for the Spanish/Catalan lessons because is when the center is quieter.

What does the hosting organisation do?

Casal de Joves is an organization who has 21 years of experience in the world of youth work.  Education, leisure time, prevention and support and accompainment of youngsters (and their families) with fewer opportunities are the basics which are covered by their work. Their methodology is based on non formal education offering a wide variety of weekly activities such as pilates, circus silk, guitar lessons, social theater, etc. to people from 12 to 35 years old from Sant Just Desvern and surrounding areas, support on the organization of cultural events promote by local organizations.

How much does this cost?

Accommodation and food will be covered by the project grant. You will receive a monthly pocket money, and your travel costs will be covered up to 275€. The logistics will be organised by the hosting organisation, so you do not have to look for your own flat etc.

Throughout the project, you are insured with CIGNA and you may be still elligible to receive Kindergeld (German state support for children).

Language lessons and training

As a volunteer, you will have two language courses. Due to the bilingual nature of Catalonia,you will receive an official Catalan course taught within a school for adults by Consorci per a la normalització lingüística. In addition, you will have access to the Online Linguistic Support of Erasmus+ programm to learn or improve your Spanish.

To assist you with the learning process, your mentor and coordinator will meet you regularly and guide you through the project. You will also take part in an on-arrival and mid-term training for all ESC volunteers in Spain.

  • You are between 18-30 years old
  • You are a resident of Germany
  • You are a pro-active and motivated person
  • You have an interest in youth work and are willing to make the most of the 3 months in Spain

We will review applications on 3rd September 2019 and select 2-3 applicants for an interview organised in the first week of September. After that, we will select a final candidate who will then be contacted by the Spanish organisation for a final interview.
A final decision will thus be made in the middle of September and the departure prepared for the last week of September/first week of October.
